Botanical Printing in Kingston

Set within the historic grounds of Devon House, this hands-on botanical printing class invites guests into a slow, sensory exploration of Jamaica’s native plant life through the cyanotype printing process on fabric. The experience begins with an introduction to plants indigenous to Jamaica, with a curated and abundant selection of leaves and botanicals such as ackee leaves, breadfruit leaves, and other locally sourced foliage. Guests will learn about the unique shapes, textures, and cultural significance of these plants and how they translate beautifully onto cloth.

Participants will then be guided through the cyanotype printing process on natural fabrics including cotton and silk. You’ll compose your own botanical arrangements, coat fabric with light-sensitive solution, and use sunlight to expose your designs—watching as the deep Prussian blues slowly emerge. The final step involves rinsing and revealing each print, a moment that feels both grounding and magical.

Each guest will leave with their own finished textile pieces, rich with botanical impressions and memory, as well as a deeper appreciation for Jamaica’s natural environment and the artistry of nature-based textile design. No prior experience is required—just curiosity, creativity, and a love of plants!
