Three-Day Textile Arts Intensive: Shibori, Water Marbling & Cyanotypes

Join Simone for a three-day creative intensive exploring three beautiful surface design techniques. Designed for beginners and experienced makers alike, this hands-on workshop invites participants to slow down, experiment, and create a collection of one-of-a-kind textile and paper artworks.

Each day focuses on a different process, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the unique magic of each medium while building a deeper understanding of color, pattern, and artistic expression.

Day One: Introduction to Shibori Dyeing

Discover the ancient Japanese art of resist dyeing. Learn a variety of folding, binding, and clamping techniques that transform fabric into striking patterns through the indigo dye process. Students will create their own collection of hand-dyed textiles while exploring the history and creative possibilities of shibori.

Day Two: Water Marbling

Experience the mesmerizing art of painting on water. Learn how to float colors on the surface of a marbling bath and manipulate them into intricate patterns before transferring them onto paper and fabric. Each print is completely unique, making water marbling one of the most exciting and unpredictable forms of surface design.

Day Three: Cyanotypes

Harness the power of sunlight to create beautiful blue-and-white botanical prints. Using natural objects, stencils, and found materials, students will learn the historic cyanotype process and produce a series of photographic-style prints inspired by nature and light.

Choose the format that best fits your schedule and creative goals. The 3-Hour Intensive offers a focused introduction to Shibori Dyeing, Water Marbling, or Cyanotype Printing through sample making and technique exploration. This option is perfect for beginners or those looking to experiment with a specific textile art, learn the fundamentals, and create a variety of samples that can serve as references for future projects. Shibori Dyeing is a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique that uses folding, twisting, binding, and stitching methods to create intricate patterns on fabric. Water Marbling involves floating paints on the surface of water and transferring the resulting designs onto paper or fabric, producing one-of-a-kind swirling patterns. Cyanotype Printing is an early photographic process that uses sunlight and light-sensitive chemicals to create striking blue-and-white prints from objects, plants, or photographic negatives.

For a deeper immersive experience, the Extended 3-Day Intensive (18 hours total) provides six hours of hands-on instruction each day and is focused on creating finished items and completed projects. Participants have the opportunity to explore each technique in greater depth, refine their skills, experiment with more advanced applications, and develop substantial finished work over the course of the program. This extended format allows time to create personalized projects, including clothing, accessories, wearable art, custom garments, textile collections, and designs for emerging or established clothing lines.
